This image by the great fetish artist Rex shows a crop-haired, mature-looking 'patient' strapped down to a chair under bright lights. With a face mask controlling his breathing and clips squeezing his pecs, unable to move or speak, he watches with horror as an attendant administers a liquid to him through an unconventional orifice. A second medic steadies the receptacle, standing by with a syringe in his hand. It's an image that has a sense of laboratory experimentation rather than medical assistance and the black rubber gloves suggest dark intentions, but we can only imagine what they might be.

I think this series probably ought to be entitled, 'The Baseball Jock's Dream' since it features a strikingly handsome man's intimate experiences with some little green men. I don't normally favour fetish scenarios with cartoon characters, but in this day and age these gremlin-like creatures are probably a safer bet as purveyors of mischief than the diminutive humanoids which I've featured in a couple of posts in the recent past. Anyway, this guy is so hunky I couldn't resist bringing him into the fold. Even without the invaders this image of him fast asleep in a vulnerable position with the window wide open would make a pleasing erotic statement all by itself.

Jero doesn't show us how the gremlins transported their acquisition to this lab-like installation. That process might have been interesting, but that's dreams for you. The end result, with the bemused hunk spread wide and secured in an X-frame by expensive-looking stainless steel fetters, is very satisfactory, however.

The kidnappers have brought the jock's bat with them, it was leaning up against the wall in picture 1, (note the logo inscription). Now it adds an element of menace to the mystery of why they kidnapped him. 

The X-restraint arrangement is fairly familiar from other artists' renderings, but it's been given a pleasing polish-up and colour make-over that's co-ordinated with the green hue of the latest users. 
All very gay.

 It turns out the LGMen only(!) want the bat as a probe. They are primarily interested in checking out the jocks plumbing (aren't we all?). The athlete proves able to accommodate the bulbous tool - with understandable difficulty but it's the results that count most in sporting endeavours and his spurt of excitement clearly delights the experimenters. It's the orgasmic arching of his body that grabs me

There are also comic versions of frames 2 and 3 with dialogue. Yes, they speak English, it is a dream after all! It ends with the kidnappers intent on making further investigations of the area as part of their scientific investigations of human physiology. Looks like a long night for the hero.

I haven't featured Jero here before but I will show more in the future, his art not only features extremely hunky characters being put through the mill, but he also seems to capture vivid responses which convey their plight in a way that seems very real despite (or maybe it's because of) the way he blends cartoonery into more conventional images.

  Of course, butch workmen don't like to advertise the fact, but a man bag is an essential accessory for holding their tools. For example, when they have to work in difficult-to-access places leaving their toolboxes behind.

It is particularly useful for working at heights but becomes essential where their clothes with their handy pockets have been removed. This happens more often than you might think. On very hot summer days stripping off is natural and hunky blokes like to show off their physiques - but only the half above the waist usually.

Jeans removal is the domain of extreme show-offs, but when a builder has to work, out in the open, totally naked it can only mean one of the following things:

He lost a drunken bet

He's a victim of some practical jokers on the site

The disgruntled foreman is demonstrating his authority.
(Perhaps preventing him disappearing to place a bet or grab a pint)

A client with perverse interests has spotted him doing wrong 
or secretly frequenting a gay bar or has some other hold over him.

His resentful look suggests his naked state has been forced on him.
At least his man bag can come to his rescue as a modesty device - in some positions - if he's lucky.
But, to be fair, taking photographs of the poor man's humiliation is really rubbing it in.

A workman typically can divert unwanted comments about his man bag by hanging it from a second belt slung across the hips where it serves to accentuate the bulge of his personal toolbox and tease his workmates. Those with a liking for men and restraint situations might find this doubly alluring. Particularly when it complements such an alluring torso with well-managed chest hair.

Perhaps a colleague has just pointed out to him how sexy he looks but in a lustful rather than an admiring way and that's why he's sweating. Of course, that response only intensifies his erotic attraction.

Mitchell - Pawed and Groped


Detective Constable Ferret (right) has been abducted by the Flat Cap Gang and trained to fight and provide other services for the amusement of punters in the 'Butt Bar'. Facing a grudge fight against the Chief Guard, he is tethered to a display post by his collar which incorporates electronic punishment routines to keep the captives under control. He is unexpectedly joined at the post by the notorious 'Black Trainer' (so called because he usually dresses in black). He has been condemned to a punishment fight by his superior in the gang because of his ill-treatment of the prisoners. He has never had to wear a control collar before.

"In the Butt Bar, Ferret was eyeing the Black Trainer, wondering how his old foe had fallen from grace and ended up tethered to the same post as him. He was tempted to gloat, but to his surprise the Black Trainer turned to him and cool as a cucumber, said in the chummy East End fashion, “Alright mate?” as though there were nothing odd about the situation and had never been any animosity or friction between them. Despite this facade however he could see The Black Trainer was unhappy. He kept twisting his neck trying to make the collar more comfortable, but it wasn't designed to be comfortable. Finally in frustration he shook his head vigorously, Ferret tried to warn him, but the collar controller reacted quicker. It automatically administered a brief shock to both of them and rapidly wound in their leads. They were drawn up together on tip toes, their bare bodies touching. The Black Trainer grunted angrily but Ferret could feel him trembling. A group of customers who had seen what had happened gathered round them, pawing them and groping them with clumsy, clammy hands."

Captives, Pets and Partners by Planet Gay

Planet Gay - Vampire 1

These first two images by Planet Gay are an unusual take on the Vampire theme seeming to imply that the blood-sucking predator might have an alternative existence as a spider rather than the traditional bat. Trapped in his web the victim awaits his fate. The gleaming highlights on his (rather enticing) body suggest that it's either an unusually hot dungeon, perhaps thanks to all the candles (see below) or that he's overwhelmed with fearful thoughts. 

Notice the cat-like beings in the background.

This image draws on two common themes from bondage photo art - suspension and spider's webs. The combination of the two in this case creates a compelling impression of captivity. The chain webs seen in bondage photos have the same potential but often seem to end up as simple spreader frames for a captive standing on the ground. With notable exceptions of course.


Planet Gay - Vampire 2

The victim, as you might expect from this artist, is a strikingly handsome young man. He courageously matches the Vampire's gaze (a dangerous thing to do if my memory serves me right). No doubt he's wondering whether his captor intends to torment him from the floor - perhaps using the candelabra - or whether he is going to morph into his spidery self to scale the web and one shudders to think what might happen after that. Spiders, you probably recall, liquefy their prey rather than sucking its blood.

This guy's entrapment is more in the nature of conventional bondage than the mysterious stickiness of the spider's web. However, there are echoes of spidery behaviour in the wrapping of his nether regions by the criss-crossing ropes, to create a sort of packed lunch. I suspect the protection and modesty they seem to provide may prove illusory, not least because the ropes bulge outwards at the point of convergence in a manner that suggests a considerable and enticing presence lurks behind them. 

Notice that there are bats in this image instead of cats. This must be where the vamp keeps his pets.

Planet Gay - Art Exhibit

This imagery of two naked men on public display, swimming underwater in a giant fishbowl is equally expressive of pets and captivity although the artist here portrays it as an Art installation. They look like a pair but it's possible these men are complete strangers. Allowing them to have a companion to share this predicament mirrors what we do with goldfish. It's a somewhat perverse kindness. The viewers must be hoping it will evolve into physical intimacy if they hang around watching for long enough.  

Presumably, these men did not volunteer for a lifetime in a goldfish bowl. On the face of it, the exhibits have the option of climbing out of it and jumping down, but it would not be a trivial undertaking getting up onto the rim and the drop is about 20 feet by my reckoning. I imagine the gentlemen enjoying their display might be inclined to grab them if they managed it.

This seems to be a museum-like place and as we know, museums are loath to surrender their treasures no matter how dubiously they have been obtained. So, I imagine there are warders around who might smell a rat if two dripping wet, naked men went padding by. Equally this exhibition might be commercial, a temporary event with the exhibits up for sale. These two can take heart from the fact that it would take a very, rich man to accommodate their particular piece of art so they might end up being returned to the river of life, unsold.

Planet Gay - Cupid's Arrow

There are many ways of acquiring a man as a pet and this would be a highly convenient one if it existed outside of myth, not least because it comes with a guarantee of loyalty without any need for time-wasting, emotional input. I assume that 'cupid' here is shooting the target for himself but strictly speaking he is supposed to operate as an independent hitman selecting people at random who already know each other but are not smitten. 

Cupid here is portrayed as a fully grown man rather than the usual baby-like cherub, which is just as well in this day and age. I'm not a fan of fancy dress in general but find his mini kilt rather fetching. It seems to have an enticingly loose fit around the waist. Mind you, this is a man who would look sexy dressed in a bin bag. I find the target's exploding shorts rather interesting too. His rather severe hairstyle suggests a catch with spirit.



Planet Gay Intoxications

This situation depicts one way of taming a spirited buck, 
but it's led to the potential 'pet' being rendered incapable.

If this mentor is a romantic type, he'll still have a decent enough snuggle partner for the night
Maybe he'll get lucky tomorrow with a convergence of morning woods.

I've tried to come up with a simple, grammatical version of Planet Gay's strangled English but it's surprisingly difficult at this time in the morning!


Planet Gay - Bromance

The conventional way of acquiring a man makes a nice romantic picture here.
Ostensibly it's two military types relaxing by their camp fire at sunset.
One appears to be reflecting on the long, hard day just passed.
The other, I fancy, has a long hard night in mind.
Military men are good material for pets, they like being ordered around.


Planet Gay - Knight and Squire

It's hard enough to win devotion of a conventional nature in real life.
Rarer still to find a man willing to be kept on a chain, even in the first flush of infatuation.
I'd say this dreamy young man has become a pet here really, not a slave.
His master gets the pleasure of owning a handsome and affectionate man 
But with that come considerable responsibilities to look after him.

There's a nice intergenerational flavour to this picture which just about keeps clear of legal pitfalls. It's something that can't be said for all of this artist's work, I've excluded some nice bondage images from his 'Party' series (below) because the captives look too young for comfort.


Planet Gay - Party 09

This image is beautifully romantic and would be more so if it were not set in the context of a military orgy whose state of chaos and drunkenness can be deduced from the figure standing on the piano in the background. The trumpeter's leather pants introduce a scent of S&M and highlights the mild sense of submission in the grape-eater's kneeling pose and the contrast between his total nudity and the feeder's relatively dressed state. The grapes are a classic symbol of drinking and drunkenness and in erotic art can be equally representative of sexual organs and lust. 
This pet's eager look is beautiful artistry.


Planet Gay - Steam Punk Sauna

Another example of pet-like devotion.

The first flush of romance is a joyous, obsessive time when every minute must be shared. The chains of attachment forged by new love are stronger than anything you will find in a fetish and leather shop. The trouble is, this excitement doesn't last for ever, the intensity settles down and for some strange reason partners who demonstrate devotion and affection like this in public become inexplicably attractive to onlookers. Pets have minds of their own and may exhibit an independent streak, so a master cannot be complacent.

There are other categories of men, forbidden but irresistible for gays of a predatory nature - e.g. straight men, best friends, best friends of partners and bar men in gay venues. There's probably a biological explanation. Gene selection gone awry perhaps, although some will credit baser motives derived from envy and frustration.



Planet Gay - Party 06

When infatuation burns itself out and familiarity becomes a bit boring it's tempting to try out shared experiences. Usually there will be no shortage of volunteers in the gay community to help out, but it might be necessary to look a bit harder if you want to find an S&M master to dominate you both. 

Here that innocuous pet lead improvised from a chain becomes an even stronger symbol of ownership and submissiveness. Immersed in this sensory experience jaded partners may find that their limits extended into realms they never dreamed of. Submissive pets may like it more than their masters who find themselves into wading into murky waters where they don't have the same level of aptitude and interest.

Planet Gay - Party 11


Sharing your pet with another dominator might seem an easier option. The proud owner and the pampered pet may both find this situation exciting at first, but a shared pet is likely to become confused about his loyalties. It may turn out he's been unwittingly gifted to a rival. 

This image illustrates in a slightly comic fashion, which may be unintentional, how a 'guest master' may have very different ideas to the loving couple about what constitutes 'having fun'.

This scene pairs with the previous picture (Party 6) where it can be seen going on in the background.

These are great images by Planet Gay. Although I realise his art is computer assisted, I am in awe of his ability to populate his images with such gorgeous-looking men and love the light touch he brings to fetish flavoured imagery, producing sweet, well-crafted images of homoerotic intimacy.

Royale Studio Models - Peter George 4, BDSM and Fetish

 This is a splendid image of Peter George, with a nice shot of his torso and featuring the same yearning, far-away look that characterises a number of his best pictures (see Peter George Part1). It's also a rather nice distillation of his boyish characteristics into growing manliness. 

 The garment he's wearing here is not at all like the very average posing pouch seen in Peter George Part 2, it seems to be overlaid with a mesh made of something like thin leather strips (as used in fringing and some boot laces). The criss-cross lines curving across his bulge create a distinctive restraining effect that hints of chastity cages and S&M leather fetish. It's an intriguing complement to the sexy dabble into bondage we saw in Peter George Part 2

On a purely visual level, the dark mesh also creates a more definite boundary to the pouch, so that it doesn't merge into his body as simple, white pouches tend to do, but stands away from his abdomen creating a particularly sexy, open effect where it dips behind the top line of his thigh.



This is the only other image I have found of Peter featuring this adapted pouch.

With its dark background, it's possible that these are part of Royale's 2-PUN set (1959), there's a marked similarity with image 2 of that group but there's no hint of it in Royale's description and both these pictures seem to have first appeared rather later - in 1961, appearing in several magazines in that year.


'Tomorrow's Man' magazine thought the exotic pouch too risky and painted it out when they carried the less showy of the two images in their June 1961 issue.




If the images above and the explicit bondage image that headlined the 2-PUN set hint at fetish interests, this picture (attributed to Royale's subsidiary, Hussar) 'wades' into that world more openly and seems to give this man a distinctly interesting, bdsm profile. 

The rubber waders in this picture provide a striking erotic contrast to the white, compact pouch Peter is wearing which which, in its tight containment, seems more exposing (to me anyway) than dangling nudity would be. It's not a very good scan unfortunately but projects a softer impression of Peter's muscularity that seems sexily incongruous with the intimidating waders

Peter's waders and fishing net masquerade as the equipment of professional fishermen, a real working man. This association is rather like the carpenter's rough saw bench seen in 2-PUN, but groin-enhancing waders were also well-established as homoerotic, fetish gear in the 1960's (think about those Tom of Finland logger images and Etienne's fisherman). 





At first sight this is also the casual pose of a workman at rest but the net here is not just deployed as a working man's tool, Peter is pulling it over his head (a not particularly pleasant experience I imagine if it has ever been used to catch fish in the sea). It's as if he's being caught by it.
The wader tops seem to be catching his pouch too, cupping it in this particular camera angle.  




Here Peter seems to be posing as the catch, brought ashore and dumped unconscious on the quayside. His open legs leave his pouch to stand out unprotected (despite the white-out)
His torso is also open and inviting to the touch. 

These last two images appeared in Grecian Guild Pictorial No 32 (Oct1961)


This picture from the 'net' series is a more convincing attempt to invoke the working fisherman as the inspiration for it all. It shows Peter checking his net for holes. 

In the preceding articles we have become familiar with Peter's impressive backside and this image adds new dimensions to that collection. If anything, the waders make it seem even more bulky. The curve of the wader's top line creates an impression of emergence and cupping. 




In this photo Peter uses the net as a cloak and it's not a terribly successful image, for some reason the body proportions don't seem to have come out quite right and he looks more boyish than ever. 

However, there is more adult, erotic interest in the detail where Peter's pouch seems to be slung in an astonishingly low and revealing position, showing most of his lower abdomen and entailing considerable bunching down below which is remarkably bold for the era.  

These last two images were published in Manual 24 (May 1961) preceding those at the start of this post (though only by a couple of months). They were attributed to Dolphin Studio, a Royale brand that was eventually replaced by Hussar, but these names don't seem to have distinctive identities and were interchanged freely. This set is a good example

I'm not sure if the slanting presentation of these last two images was a device of the magazine or a format used by the studio in their proofs. By co-incidence(?) it was also employed for the 'bamboo pole' group of images that I appended at the foot of the Pouch Post (Peter George Part 2 of this mitchmen series). This set had similar dramatic lighting (see this Crossed Poles example) and appeared in the same year - 1961. It was in a different magazine, Trim, but one that belonged to the same publishing group.




Peter's bdsm-oriented imagery continued later with his appearance in the Royale Rigging series, set R01C, a series of images showing him dressed as a sailor, tied hand and foot and spread-eagled on the ropes in a punishment position. I have tentatively dated these images to 1963 by association with other pictures using the same prop. This may have also been his last appearance for Basil Clavering's Royale and Hussar Studios, which ceased publishing in the same year.

There are also bdsm ingredients in the numerous 'storyettes' featuring this model 
(to be covered in a separate post, link pending).


We tend to associate Royale Studio with Military Uniforms and Sporting subjects, but there is always an undercurrent of fetish in them, often it's spanking, sometimes bondage and frequently forced undressing and changes of clothes. There is also a strong leather, biker thread in other storyettes which veered towards weird extremes at times and surfaced more explicitly in the images of the successor studio 'Guys In Uniform', notably the strange, uncomfortably militaristic series 'Willing To Learn'.

While researching this article I stumbled across an astonishing, entirely new colour picture of Peter George clad in a red zip-up jacket, studded belt and jock-strap with a furry pouch. This takes Peter's fetish persona into whole new realms that I've not seen anywhere else in Royale's photography. It seems to be related to the Colville Collection of coloured Royale images.

A rather sexy picture of a somewhat bewildered man, tied up and gagged in his underwear. His armband, I think, is that of a military policeman and most of  this artist's output seems to feature military scenarios. You sense this image is derived from a photograph, the bold angling somehow looks familiar, but the artistic transformation using economical outlines and subtle colouring creates a pleasing result.



In this image the bondage ingredient is given the context of an abduction with a hooded villain lording it over his captive. The top of the head is quite a sensitive area, so touching it like this is more unpleasant than it looks, it's usually inflicted on children in our culture and they hate it.

 The speech bubbles (with an unusual, angular shape) suggest the villain is better at shibari style bondage than gagging, since his captive is still able to converse with him. The language is Thai, making this the first contribution to mitchmen from that part of the world. I haven't a clue what they are saying, I'm afraid. Maybe one of my readers can help out.

The artist has shied away from a realistic depiction of what happens when two tight ropes pass under a man's crotch like this, instead they are resolutely straight (if you'll pardon the expression) and don't appear to be troubling the contents of his pants.



This image switches the captivity and restraint theme to a Police scenario, but the belt buckles suggest that the captive himself is also a cop. His captor's relaxed stance and smile suggests that it's not interrogation at the forefront of his mind. 

His crossed arms showcase meaty muscles indicating that it was his superior strength that enabled him to overpower his Police colleague. Psychologically, though, the pose closed and unthreatening, as if he's not really interested in investigating the unzipped, sagging trousers. Nevertheless the captive seems to be having an 'oh no, not that' moment. 

The detailing of the exposed underwear is a clue to this artist's interest in such garments which almost matches his obsession with uniforms.



Underwear comes to the fore again here. A traffic cop has been part-stripped, gagged and restrained in a mild hog-tie arrangement. His underpants are intact but have been soiled by his captor's body fluids as has his uniform and his body. It looks as if his boots have been stolen in the manner of 'Boot Lust' fetish, but it seems that it is the despoiling of the man and his uniform that excites this artist most. To a military man, his uniform is sacrosanct and such contemptuous treatment would be extremely offensive and degrading - and likely to get him into hot water with his superiors (figuratively speaking of course!).



If you are interested in uniforms you will probably be appreciative of the military styling and brevity of Scout gear but it's an interest that is easily misunderstood. I'm able to include this example of the delicate subject because the wearer is clearly a well-built, adult man, the Scout Leader, shall we say and he's enjoying himself alone. 

The detailing of the uniform here is marvellous and naturally, beneath every uniform is a pair of underpants. The artist's illustration of them here is much more graphic than in the pictures above. The soiling of underpants in it's different guises is a recurring theme in this artist's work.

The gag is a slightly odd embellishment which I can't explain. The absence of any other bondage suggests a very personal picadillo perhaps or maybe it's some sort of political allusion to the forbidden matters associated with this uniform.



This picture explicitly homes in on the soiling theme.
The baton introduces some slightly unpleasant allusions to external causation.



The artist's darker side is expressed even more graphically in this image with  a disturbingly but marvellously realistic depiction of a horrifying practice that was once unimaginable - literally. The blank eyes of the torturer add a truly devilish dimension to what might have been claimed to be a necessary evil. 

The captions in the picture may shed more light on motivations and the artist's stance, but any pleasure we take in appreciating the sheer quality of the drawing here has to contend with discomfort, revulsion even, at the subject matter. This artist has unexpectedly lured us into Greasetank territory



By contrast, this shibari bondage image is almost academic in nature. The naked captive has been given a muscular body and his face and haircut seem to be be indicative of inner strength and dangerous qualities if provoked. However, that potential has been tamed by this comprehensive restraint. Holding the strip of cloth in his mouth seems to be hugely submissive, it's as if he is passively waiting to be gagged with it. 

The cloth actually resembles the Japanese fundoshi or loin cloth and I believe there is a Thai equivalent, equally drenched with cultural significance regarding maleness and coming of age. Being gagged with one's own personal loin cloth is more humiliating, I suspect, than the western equivalent of stuffing mouths with designer Calvins.



That sense of power and strength being tamed and contained (and abused!) is equally evident in this colourful image of a Thai boxer who has body tattoos that lay claim to the dangerous qualities that characterise the dragon. I guess 'windy' does not mean cowardly in Thai!



This man tied to a rail in an enclosure of some sort seems from his clothing to have the qualities of a workman or labourer, with his tee shirt logos suggesting a military background too. 

Notice that he, like the cop above earlier, seems to have lost a boot, perhaps suggesting this is an encounter with  a stronger man who has an interest in the olfactory side of foot worship. Personally I find the leg openings of his shorts more tempting.



This image introduces the theme of buddies kidnapped together but it's also interesting in the way it draws attention to the intensely observed detailing of the uniforms, even their creases, in this artist's pictures. I'm fascinated by the thumb resting on the bench but I've no idea if it's a particularly significant detail. The wary, expectant looks of the prisoners tell of unpredictable captors.



This final image is a calming example of classic shibari with a near total absence of erotic undertones - on the part of the artist anyway. The captive's restraint imposes an unnatural posture on him that may become increasingly painful but he has been spared the demands of a shorter neck-to-ankle linkage. 

The colour palette is beautifully balanced here. The dark toned, plain background seems to reflect the captive's inability to see what is happening around him. The colouring of his uniform is suggestive of an Air Force man but most of the uniforms drawn by this artist seem to incorporate a winged badge, sometimes more than one.

Most of the public art is censored or innocuous with a few exceptions but you get nice drawings of military men undressing or in suggestive situations. Men Swapping Clothes No 30 - Royale Studio's Chain Pouch DRAFT

Peter George's provocative pouch and waders in the previous Royale post were not the only fetish garments in that studio's wardrobe.....

It's easy to overlook the sexual power of old black and white beefcake images which were designed to look not overly sexy, but the best of them still manage to turn their muscular subjects into erotic gods. In this informal and intimate pose, the softly moulded muscularity of Brian Lamprill seems bulky, real and almost touchable. His indrawn navel creates a strangely alluring detail.

 The skimpy garment he is wearing has the look of a bikini rather than posing pouch. It seems like a properly designed, fashion garment designed to highlight and enhance his near nudity rather than being an artificial screen, crudely improvised for the sake of modesty. It's embellished by a distinctive chain net that adds a dose fetishistic sexiness by suggesting restraint and containment of what lies within.

He's thoughtfully handling an epee here, rolling the handle between his fingers as though considering what to do with it. It's an instrument of combat, a rather refined style of fighting, and it has with the ability to pierce body muscle. That makes its position here, slanting across the bulge of his pouch a very S&M-like touch.

Brian Lamprill was a serious body builder who posed regularly for Royale Studio including storyettes like 'PT Class'


Vintage Hussar Studio beefcake

Tibor Urgay wears the same garment to add a fetish flavour to this muscular pose. This model was usually portrayed by the Royale group as boyish and elfin-like rather than beefy like this. His physique in this photo complements the chains which have assumed a wider, more rounded shape to accommodate his projecting tackle.

Tibor Urgay also appeared in the Hussar Studio's PT Class


Pouch bulge restrained by chain mesh net

The same, intimate garment worn by a third model (probably Tibor Noszgay). He doesn't have quite the same allure in my eyes, despite a tidy body. However, his more upright, open pose shows the forward thrust of the pouch in a way that makes the chain containment seem more of a chastity device than simply an exotic decoration. 

His serious expression might reflect the fact that he knows this is a stock Royale/Hussar Studio wardrobe item, one that has been worn by other models before him. If he finds it exciting to wear, he might be imagining just what his predecessors must have felt.




Tibor Noszgay is more recognisable (and more attractive) in this picture which I presume is from the same set. In this image, you can see his waist chain curving round the far thigh but it seems to have disappeared on the near side. The dark line you can see is the shadow of his sword, which looks much like the one being played with by Brian Lamprill in the top picture. 



James Julien gets himself into groin chains here. He was probably snapped for the conventional beefcake stream, which featured many of the most prominent bodybuilders of the day. At that time the bodybuilding world desperately portrayed itself as a thoroughly decent, health and fitness practice. That may account for the less-than-amazing pouch shape. Still, one can only imagine the thrill of excitement some of those men must have felt when they were invited to don this indisputably kinky garment. He looks as if he might be feeling a little faint and is clinging to the screen for support.

This picture did not appear until 1968, long after the demise of the Royale group.

The chain pouch also figured in one of Royale's most notorious photo sets, featuring the real enlisted men of the Royal Horse Guards. That was bad enough for the men at the Ministry (of Defence), but for them to use their own Uniforms to create homosexual erotica and pairing them with a suggestive pouch like this, well, it must have blown their institutional fuses.  

This Horse Guard is Tom Manlick. Just a wild guess but I'd say that's not his real name. The helmet affords additional protection of his identity.

In this picture you can see that the chain pouch is completely separate from the cloth inner lining but nevertheless, it's wearers must have been conscious of the other men's groins it had previously graced. You're very aware of Tom's loin in this picture.

Interestingly, all these chain pouch images were attributed to Hussar Studio and not the Royale brand, which had been discarded by the time they appeared.

I've not found a picture of Peter George in the chain pouch but given this image I'd not be surprised to see one. He seemed to have an affinity for fetish and bdsm themes.

2020

Oztangles - The Temple 02

Oztangles produced a series of images in 2020 called 'The Temple' and in this one he creates the atmosphere of a sacrificial chamber with a captive lying spread-eagled across Oz's favourite altar stone. Before him stands a monk-like guard armed with a very sharp-looking machete.  

Two more men are suspended from nearby pillars looking on as they await their own fate. Meanwhile they are being utilised as light sources having been fitted with somewhat incongruous, leather fetish gags which are apparently come supplied with an ingenious, candle sconce accessory that you won't get from Ikea. Judging by the skeletons dangling just behind the altar, this is a long term commitment. 

Oz's rendering of anatomy and clothing reaches impressive levels here, but the background architecture is a bit flat. He dips into perilous waters with his retro, Afro-cum-Oceanic characterisation of the High Priest.


Oztangles - The Temple 06

The denouement turns out to be more prosaic as the intimidating guard melts away leaving the principals to get down to some dirty work.

A nicely balanced composition with good suspension imagery. 


Oztangles - Zane in Trouble

Suspension is the main focus of this image with a captive about to be dipped into water. The men are clad in traditional leather fetish gear but the setting has the feel of a modern workshop. It's a background Oz has used to good effect in other images. Here it all looks surprisingly clean and clinical.  

An ingenious transparent container is used for the dunking water. It gives a stronger sense that Zane is being lowered into it, not just suspended above it. It looks a tightish fit too, with not much scope for Zane to struggle, let alone lifting his head out of the water once he is dipped in it. 
These two are not playing games.

The character at the controls on the left has an other worldly quality about him that is quite sinister with dark, unreal skin toning and a fierce face that resembles the vengeful characters seen in medieval paintings and statues. Zane's pointing finger suggests he is attempting to negotiate a reprieve.


Oztangles  - Big Mistake

The man in this image seems to have made a surprising choice for the location of what seems to be his first tattoo. I can't say I'm qualified to comment on just how painful this is and, since tattoos feature in Oz's images infrequently, I suspect he is commenting from the side-lines too. Judging by his erectile state the recipient is finding some compensation in the caring hands of the tattooist, if not the needle itself - or maybe it's the combination of the two that is so stimulating. 

I'm no expert but the way the needle is being applied here doesn't look conventional. One might wish the tattoist would be showing more concentration on the task in hand and surely he doesn't need to spread his legs quite that wide!

The tattooing scenario disguises the sexual implications of this scenario only thinly, but there's a second, less obvious layer to the eroticism. It's the customer's right hand, tightly gripping the armrest of the chair. It also appears to be resting in the tattooist's crotch, indeed it's easy to mistake his wrist with a suggestive body part belonging to the other man. In its way, this element is a mini-masterpiece of  hidden eroticism that the old masters of gay art would have greatly appreciated. 

Oz has managed to find some interesting and authentic-looking background detail for this picture which greatly enhances it. For once there isn't a dildo in sight.


Oztangles - Zdeno's Workout 1

I rather like this straightforward piece showing a boxer beefing up in a gym. It's a place which we've visited several times before in this retrospective (see Part 4, covering 2015-19). If you've seen those images there are no prizes for guessing what happens to the mirror in the companion piece to this picture - Zdeno's Workout 2 (Clue #1:- he's naked in it, Clue #2 see below).

2021

Oztangles - Quarantine Wank


Lest we forget, 2020-21 gave the word 'isolation' a whole new meaning. For gay men obsessed with cruising the deprivation must have been at least the equal of the more well-publicised traumas.
The very term 'lock down' must have seemed a cruel irony 

This image celebrates the consolation prize God left with men, for use when they weren't required for procreation. You probably remember that we have seen other versions of this memorable, sexy pose  at mitchmen blog. 

Oz's cum-spattered mirror seems to have become something of an obsession, extending back a long way (e.g. 2015), well before the virus struck, but the 'virtual' partner seen in the reflection acquired a new vividness in those months of isolation. The 'Angel' character goes back even further to 2009  and has made other sporadic appearances since then (notably in 2019). His imaginary wings that which might have allowed him to fly away to freedom became a poignant symbol in a period that was a time of introspection and nostalgia for the old days.

And who believed the politicians who said Covid would become the new normal? 
They actually got it right for once, dammit!


Oztangles - Ed's Nightmare 05

The centrepiece of 2021's offerings has to be 'Ed's Nightmare' in which he is abducted from his bed by a military gang and handed over in shackles to the leather clad thug we see in this picture. In a typically Oz, high-tech torture chamber he is mounted in a metal spreader frame in front of a TV camera which is dispassionately recording every moment of his nightmare. 

 The X-frame and spread-eagle pose is standard bdsm imagery, but combining it with suspension is less common and very disorienting for the recipient. Oz manages to infuse Ed's limbs with a degree of tension that make it look genuinely stretched. His body shaping and skin tones are softly succulent and the dramatic, ethnic tattoo on his backside accentuates his vulnerability and nudity. 

Those grey demonic skin tones seen in 'Zane in Trouble' (above) surface again in this villain (if you view him as one). He sits back contemplating his prey and  allowing Ed plenty of time to assess him in return, wondering what he is planning to do with him. Meanwhile the camera catches every minute.


Oztangles - Ed's Nightmare 11

Ed is subjected to a series of torments without ever leaving the frame. Many of them utilise electricity and this, the last scene, is arguably the most dramatic. Notice the time that has elapsed during this demanding examination. His feet have been lowered closer to the ground, perhaps to achieve electrical grounding, but he can still only reach it with his toes. The curious balancing on curled toes here seems to reference ballet technique, a painful way to support body weight for the untrained - and it looks it here, although it's not clear whether the frame is obliging him to do that in this set-up.


Oztangles - Tony's Adventure 06

'Tony's Adventure', by contrast is far less traumatic. He is tempted into a strip club by a 'Men Only' promise. After enjoying the show he goes exploring and finds the delectable stripper expecting visitors in his dressing room. Tony is portrayed as a chunky, ordinary man who is probably delighted by the stripper's eagerness to serve him. Its a dream come true that was never expected. 
All of us can relate to that. 

There's a hint of mild S&M in the toys which Tony can see draped over the chairback and on the dressing table beyond (seen by us in the mirror). The shiny thing in his groin is proves to be a chunky cock-ring later, but who fitted it is not revealed.


Oztangles - Tony's Adventure 09

Tony gets to sample one of the dildos in the finale but he's had the pleasure of the stripper's ass in the mean-time. This is the nearest the stripper gets to returning the favour. Clearly Tony isn't disappointed and there's a nice sense of  playfulness here which shows the hunky stripper to be a thoroughly nice bloke, happy to give this somewhat unprepossessing stranger an experience to remember and cherish.


Oztangles - Tony's Adventure 07

This is an intermediate scene. Normally I would pass over an image like this since it's frequently replicated in every porn film you've ever seen and most homoerotic art. But I think Oz has made an exceptionally good job of it here. Tony's pose is perfection and his chunky physique is transformed into an idealised form that any man would appreciate. Paradoxically, the slender stripper unexpectedly exhibits gloriously chunky thighs, an exaggeration that I appreciate. His sitting position has no hint of submissiveness, he's comfortable giving service. Nice.


Oztangles - Laundry Day 01

This is a more everyday fantasy, which was memorably invoked in 1985 (but not fulfilled) in the Nick Kamen launderette ad for Levi jeans and also in one of my own ramblings My Beautiful Launderette. Like the 'Tony' series this story features a man whose outward appearance might be considered unattractive by some, in this case because he is wearing spectacles. 

By contrast his opposite number is a classic, desirable hunk with a trendy, undercut hairstyle, an enviable physique and skimpy cut-off shorts intended to make sure everyone notices him. But in an unusual twist on the 'Unattainable Bar Man' syndrome, it's he who falls for the Laundromat attendant - or his ass at any rate - as he watches him tending the machines.


Oztangles - Laundry Day 05

Inevitably the spectacles have to be discarded as soon as the attendant gets down on his knees to show his appreciation . A routine sex episode follows but it climaxes (as it were) is this unusual, wheelbarrow position which suggests to me that this dumb hunk is something of a sexual athlete. Or perhaps the bespectacled attendant is a very good teacher.


Oztangles - Pier Street Sunday Morning

This image is also based on an unusual pose, but it is really a commonplace sight on city streets and at surfer beaches. Oz transforms the imagery by making the city skateboarder a grown up man and stripping away his clothing to reveal an emphatically adult and well-honed physique. The resulting figure study seems surprisingly original and his twisted body and balancing pose is comparable in beauty to the male statues of antiquity - just imagine the skateboard replaced by a discus or a javelin in his hand. However, this modern, over-grown kid is much sexier. 

This is one of those render pictures where it's hard to tell where the software leaves off and the artistry begins, but for me it's the result that counts and this is a great result. It's one of several images in 2021 where Oz explores athletic, unconventional body poses (like the wheelbarrow and quarantine images above) and it's much to the benefit of his art.


Oztangles - Naughty Corner 02

The title of this piece prepares you for another S&M romp but in fact this is more chuck-flick than bdsm. It shows the moment when Mario, the sub is freed from his chastity cage and tether after 3 weeks in isolation for dilly-dallying with the plumber. Oz does not indicate whether the formidable electrical installation nearby has figured in this punishment.

 The sub-title to this scene is 'Keep still, dammit, the key's stuck!'  So it's actually a comic moment with the master kneeling, apologetically almost, before his hyper -frustrated slave. 
Another cum-splattered mirror seems in prospect.


Oztangles - A Busy Day (detail)

I won't leave 2021 without mentioning this series, entitled 'Execution'. It's a frank and disturbing telling of a grisly tale with a twist of cynical exploitation thrown in. Coming from this artist, it's unexpected. I have covered noose art here at mitchmen before (see 'noose' label at foot of the post for other posts on the subject) but this detail is all I intend to show of Oz's challenging contribution to the genre.

Oztangles - Punishment Cell 01

Oztangle's 2022 work is dominated by the Punishment Cell series. It picks up the theme of isolation as punishment which featured also in Naughty Corner (just above). However, in this case it's a Military Punishment for answering back. The nudity of the prisoner here doesn't quite fit with that background and the chastity device on a chain which is only just long enough to allow him use the bucket seems to take us into Guantanamo country. It seems that he is in the midst of relieving his (understandable) anxieties when the disciplinarian Sergeant Vane arrives wearing his 'wet work' outfit and bringing rope and blood-curdling promises.


Oztangles - Punishment Cell 03

Jack, the hapless offender is released from his chain, but only to be trussed for punishment on a bloodstained table. Hopefully, the assorted implements on the bottom shelf mean the torments planned for him will be bloodless. 

The tight leg restraint shown here is a tie that has long excited me, going way back to the 'My Initiation' image. It's ultimately a demanding stress position and often features (without ropes) in wrestling contests. Tied like this, I doubt that Jack could achieve the back-lift shown, unaided.

Oztangles - Punishment Cell 05

Sgt Vane's ropework ultimately results in this neat shibari packaging coupled with suspension (again). The Sgt proceeds to torment imaginatively Jack's unprotected, vulnerable areas. 

This is a further example of Oztangle's interest in unusual, stressed positions for the male body which seemed to begin in 2021. Technically it's a significant advance from the simple X-Spreading deployed in Ed's Nightmare (see above) and several other Oz images.  For the observer this tight, self-contained restraint causes the erotic focus to shift from the body of the prisoner to the restraint mechanism. 

This tight relative of the hog-tie position is very hard to capture, even in photographs, so Oz has done well here. The eternal rendering problem of achieving a snug-looking fit with clothing and (here) rope doesn't prevent him from producing a great, stimulating image.


Oztangles - Punishment Cell 08

Sgt Vane is not without a sense of humour. He expounds the theory of chaotic movement as he swings Jack on the suspension chain with weights attached to his nipples and balls and going in different directions. Oz manages to capture a real sense of swinging movement in this picture and his contrasting characterisations of the two men work well too. The more subtle bdsm of this image lies in the tweaking of Jack's arms as he swings, heavily weighted on the chain.


Oztangles - Punishment Cell 10

Lesson learned,  Jack formally makes amends in the time-honoured, homoerotic way. 

Offering service while tied up is not uncommon in fetish imagery but I can't recall it being portrayed in quite this way before. Oz emphasises Jack's restraint and submissiveness, rather than the sexual exchange. This position, formally kneeling with head-bowed, departs from the usual 'oral' formula whereby the sucker is expected to look up at his master as though entranced with him and anxious to know that he's doing the job correctly.  
By contrast Jack's pose looks detached and rather dignified and it is intensely appealing.  


Oztangles - Five More Minutes

This image relies on a similar use of weights to torment, but with the focus on simple endurance rather than rough tugging. Once again, Oz does well to create a real impression of stretching with the captive forced to stand on tip-toes. It's a virtually inescapable form of restraint and immobilisation and it's pure simplicity heaps frustration on top for the captive. His agonised expression gives a real sense of that his thresholds are already being tested to the limit and the announcement (in the title) of an extension to his designated time is adding anger to his difficulties.

The tormentor's slightly unkempt and grizzled appearance contrasts with the college boy neatness of his test subject and predictably he's completely indifferent to the poor man's mute appeal. Characteristically abreast of the latest trends, Oz shows him taking a photo of his discomfort and helpless captivity. It adds a little twist of sadistic humiliation with the further threat of a public airing of his plight for the amusement of strangers - and possibly those who know him.

These two make an improbable couple, but Oz des not enlighten us on what has brought them together in this way.


Oztangles - The Night Before

This image may offer a clue to that puzzle. It seems to show the same older man, but dressed in an unexpectedly professional manner. He's approaching a younger street hustler who's neatly dressed and clean looking, but provocatively appealing. More fantasy than reality alas. He has a similar appearance to the prisoner in the preceding picture.


Oztangles - The Morning After

The companion image shows a very different outcome with both parties having ended up in a seedy hotel(?) room, naked and apparently unfulfilled. It harks back to the 2019 Night Clerk image which seemed to embody a similar sense of disillusion and disappointment. In another Oz reversal of the usual, depressing rules of life, it seems to be the prodigiously equipped young hunk who has not come up to the mark.

The Surprising Art of Cas

Cas - Hustler

The 1960's artist Cas was an omission from my original A-Z series on fetish artists which seems unwarranted in retrospect. This image, one of his better known, probably explains why I left him out. The hustler clad in skin-tight leather pants has a splendid muscular body but Cas has depicted him as a coquettish, effeminate vamp right down to the way he is holding his symbolically smouldering match in a pose worthy of Marlene Dietrich. It seems to encapsulate the negative, self-contradictory stereotyping of the era which portrayed gays as being effeminate and at the same time sexual predators which ordinary (i.e. straight) men apparently found hard to resist. 

It's not a look that grabs me erotically but I suppose I should have appreciated that Marlene's persona was a deliberate, bold assertion of female sexuality and strength that completely debunked the 'little woman' conventions and restraints of her era. Cas is emulating that here, his hustler is mocking the stereotyping by owning and flaunting it, he oozes (almost literally it seems) self assurance and confidence. If you cover his face, the depiction of his muscularity is probably the most erotic in all of Cas's work.

Cas - Aperitif

In this brilliant picture, Cas flips the coin, poking fun at gays who adopt a façade of rough, butchness that cannot hide their cultivated inner-selves. This biker is a visual treat for leather lovers. He casually sprawls across an antique chair, beautifully drawn with torn, dishevelled clothes, unkempt hair and stubbled cheeks, projecting an image that promises rough and dirty sex. There's a cleverly disguised outline of something big in his pants. However, his delicate cigarette holder and tiny glass of aperitif, reveals him to be highly refined, the shoulder-ribbons suggest he's something of a dandy too. 

You can also take this to be an Eliza Doolittle scenario where a tough is being taught manners by a man of a 'higher station' in life. That scenario was not an uncommon experience for gay men back then. By necessity, they met anonymously in public places - toilets, discreet gay bars or clubs - where they were equally likely to meet a plumber or a professor, a rich man or a poor man, a young man or a pensioner, a soldier or a ballet dancer.

Cas - Director's Cut?

Humour runs through much of this artist's work but satire aside, it's not without it's harder edges. This jokey take on the classic, naïve model who is manipulated by his paymaster into stripping off to provide sexual entertainment is extended into bdsm territory by incorporating bondage as well. The caption provides fuel for imagining an outcome where a St Sebastian scenario is played out for real. The realisation by the hapless actor of what may be about to happen isn't really funny at all - but it is sexy.

The label to the left of the captive's foot says 'Intolerance Scene 1724', bottom left and is probably referencing the message of  DW Griffith's epic 1916 film, although it did not deal specifically with sexual intolerance.

It's ironic that the sadism of Christian story-telling and imagery has for centuries provided a cloak of legitimacy for homoerotic art that explores the darkest forms of  desire.

Cas - Laundromat

'mitchmen' has visited the laundromat scenario a few times recently (see Art of Oztangles 5 , 'Laundry Day' image for links) but you might be surprised to learn that Cas beat Nick Kamen to it by about 20 years. It's another wry dig at the whole 'butch biker' image of course but he's done it by taking a common, semi-clad, beefcake magazine pose and dropping it into a real world setting where the erotic implications of the residual cap and boots are enhanced and can ferment in the pants of imaginative viewers. 

The oppressive restrictions of the day deterred him from suggestively showing another man in the image, although a cartoon woman or women registering some sort of comic response, like that in a 'saucy' seaside postcard by McGill would have probably have been perfectly OK.

Smoking cigarettes features in many of his pictures. In those days it was a near-universal practice, often characterised as masculine and expected of you if you wanted to fit in.

Cas - Roughhouse

This image shows the sort of scenario that might have been triggered by that innocent laundry image. Ostensibly a dramatic wrestling scene it's pretty obvious on further inspection that this man is having his jeans removed by the two assailants. They are both essentially naked as far as we can see, leaving the strong suspicion that his underpants will go the same way.

The wooden boarding at the back and the cap and boots worn by one of the attackers look rather like sea-faring imagery at first sight but the badge on the cap points to a biker scenario in the days when turned down boot tops were trendy and WW2 German army logos were a commonplace way of expressing individuality (a practice which spectacularly resulted in Prince Harry hitting a brick wall of revulsion and providing an early demonstration of his uncanny ability to manufacture unwarranted press intrusion by wearing a full blown uniform to a party in 2005).

Cas - Bar Fight

Fight scenes were a legitimate way of showing men interacting in a highly physical manner with their inadvertently ripped clothes exposing sexy flesh, although Cas here seems to rely more on the ambiguity caused by relatively featureless, skin-tight clothing. A scattering of playing cards provides a simple excuse for the argument if not the extensive semi-nudity (strip poker doesn't usually get this heated)!  

The scenario is a blank canvass for placing men in close proximity in all sorts of undignified states which is exactly what Cas has done. The careful juxtaposition of bulging crotches, rounded backsides and phallic bottles does the rest. This image contains an (Heavenly) host of hidden heroticism.
At this time of year I'm tempted to ask readers how many they can spot! The most notable for me is the champagne glass held aloft, as if to an optic in a bar, to catch the produce of the bulge directly above while the man holding it gazes purposefully at a curvaceous ass emblazoned with the Cas logo in a way that accentuates it's shape, like a tattoo.

Cas could not have imagined that magazine staples would add a double-dose of bdsm piercing when the image was published. Or am I underestimating the cunning of  the artist? It is a very curious vertical alignment after all. Or was it the magazine editor who mischievously laid out the page like this?

Etienne - Bar Brawl

Etienne also did a bar-room brawl around this time, with sailors. It's a simpler, more fragmented composition but offers a more direct sensuality with the use of colour accentuating the revelatory effect of ripped clothing. There is one notable 'hidden' erotic reference, however, in the pair of sailors far left who could be construed as enjoying a hand job. Etienne's men are remarkably handsome and adult (I love that dishy blond on the floor!) but they are arguably less real and less varied than those of Cas in the preceding picture.

This image is usually attributed to Cas and the face of the sub certainly fits his style. It's to be expected that he would have done explicit pictures like this although it can't have been published openly in the 1960's. You sense experimentation with different racial appearances in other of his pictures, but this is his only black man as far as I know and it's not terribly successful.

From a mitchmen point of view the interest lies not so much in the master and his prodigious organ, but in his riding crop and the impression it has made on the young sub's rear quarters. The fingers steadying his head are a nice detail.

Cas loved to depict tight jeans which was the most legitimate way for a man to dress sexily in those days. The biker jacket slung across naked shoulders was a classy embellishment - 1960's cool if you like. Around this time there was a fashion for low waisted trousers with tiny zips and this picture seems to reflect that trend. Cas, like Oztangles, was abreast of what was fashionable. The upwards looking viewpoint accentuates the effect of the tight jeans and adds the mild suggestion of a dominant personality.

This is an exceptionally well-drawn image, breezing through a tricky perspective.

Cas - Tights

Although I'm not fond of the way Cas drew eyes like this, this picture seems very sexy to me with a pugnacious, insolent face (which might have been a prototype for The Hun's blond convict) set atop a muscular torso (glimpsed through an open shirt) and patterned tights that accentuate thick thighs. 

This isn't so much a portrait as a vehicle for erotic characteristics. The patterned tights seem to be those of a circus performer but the sword and distant seagulls point to him being a pirate. These two professions were blurred together of course in the swashbuckling movies of the day starring ex-circus performers like Burt Lancaster - in tights.

The half-dressed gardener is the mitchmen brand image and has been the suggestive, saucy background of numerous adverts and film scenes, most of which post-date this image. 

The clothing of this young man accentuates his physique in a similar way to that in the tights picture above. Here too the open shirt looks as if it is being pulled tight by something hidden inside his shorts. The tattered sleeves are augmented in this image by a tear on one shoulder but are completely missing on the other revealing hairy arms (another brawler?).

He has deliberately turned up his leather shorts, far more than seems necessary for doing his job, but accentuating hairy thighs which flaunt his masculinity. The prominent pouch does so even more directly. He stands, hand on hip with a serious pouty face like a rebellious teenager whose just been told he's got to do an extra hours. 

You might prefer to see him as confronting someone out of the picture, warning him not to try and interfere with that tempting flap.

Cas was a regular contributor to beefcake magazines in the 1960's but he hasn't acquired the same lasting fame as his contemporary, Etienne, although he was arguably a better draftsman. Etienne had a canny eye for the commercial and played safe with his characterisations, he was also bolder with his subject matter. For all his sharp satire and with the exception of Black Master, Cas stays within the tradition of innuendo and hidden artifice. There's probably a good reason for this but it affects the way modern eyes view his legacy.

The Abandoned Slave

Planet Gay - Waiting For Christmas

I already expressed my admiration for the artwork produced by Planet Gay and the delicious hunks he's populated them with in several articles this year, but I couldn't resist making this image the centrepiece of my Christmas Day offering, which as usual is dedicated to anyone who is alone or who feels alone at this time of year when everyone else seems to be enjoying themselves.

I suppose this image of togetherness with a gay couple gazing out of a window at the winter wonderland might seem an odd choice in that context but gays don't have to be in a relationship to share such pleasures and you don't have to be in a relationship to appreciate the joy sharing brings. Besides, looking out for Santa's sleigh is a cute allusion to happy childhood memories. 

For me, this is also a normalising image that gives gay men a legitimate place of their own in a festival that is resolutely 'family' oriented in our society (for 'family' read 'heterosexual'). Hence I've tagged this post with my 'Pride' label at the bottom.

Planet Gay - Who's Not Been A Good Boy

It turns out the two young men are waiting for Santa to arrive and the light in the first picture signals the approach of his gift-laden sleigh. (It looks like Rudolph's nose has been upgraded up this year or else he's been replaced by a lighting system borrowed from a  Pop Festival). The fact that the pair seemed to have stripped off in readiness for Santa's arrival suggests they haven't put a train set or an Action Man at the top of their Christmas list. 

We all know that boys who haven't been good during the year don't get a present from Santa. Unfortunately gay men have a talent for being naughty even if they do have skills with dressing and décor (witness the authentic Victorian chaise). I'm not sure whether getting spanked by Santa counts as a present or a punishment, but I'm glad to see the pink-cheeked recipient looks genuinely discomforted. 

I suppose he'll be getting a consolation gift from Santa's sack afterwards - I'm talking about the one sitting on the floor of course, filled with nutritious fruits, nuts and gingerbread men. Yum!


Planet Gay - We Heard You Weren't a Good Boy

In this picture his partner already has his gingerbread man, so he may have been spanked already.
The roaring fire in the background could be a clue to the fiery heat that he's feeling.
Unfortunately the way Santa is weighing up his backside doesn't suggest he's finished with it yet.
Hence the telling look of dread on his face.

Perhaps the biscuit is a bribe to comfort him in readiness for 
the blunt end of the chunky candy cane being brandished by the elvish assistant.

It's not clear whether the gym horse that the young man has been set astride is a piece of equipment the couple keep in their living room for daily exercises or has been brought along by Santa on the luggage rack of his sleigh for this express purpose.

It turns out the Santa gang is really a hit squad from the local vaccination centre.
I'd hazard a guess that this injection it's not for flu or covid.
Perhaps it's a precaution against the possible fall-out from his undisclosed naughtiness. 
But it's also quite possible that Santa is sticking a needle in this man's bottom
because he likes sticking needles in the bottoms of cute men.

Royale Models - Peter George 5 - Fishing for Bulges

Peter George seems to be hanging up his fishing net here at the end of long day of work. 
It's a nice image giving a pleasing, mildly suggestive view of his cute, tight ass. 
It's a civilian scenario but he's wearing a military belt, it is discarded for other shots in the set.

The underlying, arm raised, pose here is inspired by the victory salute in classical statues, so draping it with a black net seems like a deliberate comment on the artistic restrictions caused by the social attitudes of the 50's. The rope coiled round his wrist is even more obviously symbolic of restraint. 

This group of photos appeared in 1961/62 under Royale's, then-emerging, Hussar brand. Peter's tight white trousers with the bottoms of the legs turned up copy what sailors used to do when washing decks but the practice also suggests a dash of stylish individuality which has not been completely overwhelmed by the uniform. 

The rope and the net augment the nautical theme but also supply a hint of bdsm.

Calf length trousers were also used for sailor imagery by other contemporaries, such as Palatinus and Barrington. This picture addresses the drudgery and humiliation of having to wash decks directly but the lump in his pants suggests he doesn't mind being bossed. They look more like riding breeches than naval ducks to me but I'm not complaining!

 This is the time of year for nicely wrapped packages, so this grainy image of Peter George is not entirely out of place. The bulge in his pants is teasingly believable here (if not quite as riveting as Matt Carrol's hosepipe just above).

Peter has discarded his belt here and is also disentangled from the rope and net, but his slightly seductive pose does not entirely dispel the simmering possibility of restraint and bdsm. We saw the fishing net previously, you may recall, in the fetishistic, wader images of Peter George Part 4. It's possible these pictures come from the same shoot. 

US sailors did wear straw boaters something like this at one time, but I'm not sure that Brits ever did, certainly not with shredded brims. Basil Clavering was an ex-sailor and a stickler for authenticity by some accounts, but the pictures in this series put me more in mind of a farm boy than a sailor.

 This proud, defiant pose with net and rope completely discarded seems to pick up that idea of throwing off restraint. It also  gives Peter a chance to show off some impressive pec and arm musculature projecting a sense of inner power that counterbalances the sudden appearance of  'nakedness' produced by discarding the belt and all those accessories.

I dare say that the bulge lower down has also caught your eye. It' looks a more improbable manifestation here but still teases the eye with intriguing detail and I suppose it contributes a sexual dimension to the story of the inner man breaking free. It irresistibly reminds me of the homoerotic trickery of British contemporary photographer, Scott of London*.

I don't think the tight fit of the pants around Peter's thighs is faked, however, it's a very sexy look.

*Normally Basil Clavering and his colleague John Parkhurst are credited with producing the photographs of Royale Studio but I do wonder whether Scott (aka Tom Nicholl) was involved when I see 'bulge' pictures like this. He certainly photographed some of the models used by Royale for his own output and I recently stumbled across a reference which suggests a more direct connection which I will reveal in a future post.

No Peter George series of photographs is complete without some shots of his amazing backside. 
Even cloaked in trousers in an image of indifferent quality, his allure shines through.
These clandestine peeks always seem sexy.
His face seems to reflect his growing maturity from this viewpoint.

Freed from his constraints the freed man relaxes into dreams while he waits for the right man to come alone (Matt Carrol?). I don't think he'll have to wait too long.

Peter's backside is once again the focus here in an image that is unquestionably framed with an eye to sexual allure. There's absolutely no pretence of showcasing an athlete's dedication to health and weight-training in the gym - although I've no doubt that pursuit contributed to his shapeliness in this department. 

This daring image appeared in the British Magazine, Scan No 10 in 1961. 
Whether they got away with it I don't know.

Planet Gay - The Slave Is Washed

 Alexandro's New Year resolution was to win Rome's 'Best Kept Slave' competition.
He got his best one up early on the day to give him a good wash and scrub 
(which was sorely needed).
He enjoyed himself so much that he scrubbed and scrubbed 'til the slave was even sorer.
"Please stop Master" he complained "I must look spotless now!"

But he didn't.

The trouble was his hairiness, thought Alessandro
As a man it made him look nice, but would the judges prefer a more boyish look?
Unfortunately if he decided to shave him, he couldn't change his mind later.
But after much thought he decided it probably would be the best presentation.

He could have asked a servant to do the job, but they might botch it.
Shaving his slave himself turned out to be even more fun than scrubbing him.
Especially as his sensitised skin made him twist and turn in his master's arms.
It really was a most agreeable sensation..........

He soon discovered his slave had hair in the most surprising places.
Getting into all those nooks and crannies took time and patience
because he certainly couldn't afford to cut him 
and who knew where the judges might look?

Alessandro's slave didn't make it to the competition at the forum
The anointing of his skin with oil proved to be the last straw for Alessandro.
He dragged his slave off and spent the rest of the day in bed with him.
Where both men eventually fell asleep feeling like winners.

The outright winner is an index which I created, linking to a series of posts at Metalbond featuring 11 brand new pictures by Brick. An earlier announcement about the first release of these new pictures also made this table at No 5. It celebrates a welcome return of a talented artist to the fetish art scene after a lengthy absence. The story shows two newcomers being inducted into the Academy. He doesn't seem to have lost any of his imaginative flair during the layoff and his technical skills are even better!

There were no blockbusters this year. Brick's winning score of  2082 is the lowest since 2017 when the inaugural Milking Factory post scored 1411. Top scores since then have hovered around the 3000 mark. At the foot of the table, the cut-off scores have levelled off in the last 3 years, 885 was slightly down on last year's 1012, but in line with 2019. Visits to the blog overall in 2022 also dropped, but only slightly (by 0.7%) after last years spectacular post Covid recovery. These trends seem to imply a broader range of interests in my visitors.

Hot on Brick's heels was another 'old hand' - Kalabro with 'Slave Gang', a vibrant picture that picked up on the current vogue for slavery scenarios. I'm a long time admirer of this artist's dynamic 'ordeal' images but paradoxically this wasn't really one of them. 

Kalabro seems to have withdrawn from sharing his amazing art of late, a sad situation that prompted me to post a retrospective of his work this year as a supplement to the A-Z article of 2009 . 'Best of Kalabro' also made this chart at No 16.

I posted a major, long-overdue retrospective of the work of Oztangles (2006-2022) at mitchmen blog during the year so it's not surprising to see two of the five articles near the top spot. I would normally have expected the lead article to do best, since I send people there if they want to read the whole series from the start. It's there but some way behind at No 6. Oz is another well-established artist and his gifted but sometimes puzzlingly uneven offerings made a fascinating project for me.

Gilgamesh gained two mid-table entries in the chart this year with his own unique brand of renders featuring heavily muscled protagonists whose maturity makes their plight all the more poignant as they are condemned to incarceration and torment in chains in dark, damp dungeons. He too started posting his images way back ca 2006, but his modern work shows a leap in intensity and realism since those early days and the dark story-telling, laden with menace and despair is engrossing. I suppose these hyper-masculine creatures are an acquired taste but there's an earthiness about them that makes them quite different to the bound hunks of J.F. and the youthful lust of 'Muscle' Matt

Ridley at No 8 is perhaps this year's wild card. His art, like Oztangles and Gilgamesh dates from the early years of rendering (ca 2005) and it seems surprisingly polished in retrospect. The milking theme that dominates the samples I posted is however a perennial favourite here at mitchmen so it's understandable why it's done so well.

I also posted 5 articles featuring the work of Planet Gay at mitchmen in 2022, two made it into the chart and he is the top 'new wave' entry this year. He seems to have carved a niche for a sort of chocolate box style of bdsm art, with beautiful images showing delicious men being introduced to the delights of fetish practices in a way that seems surprisingly innocuous. Most of the articles were published too late in the year to make an impact in the table but the first got to 4th position and the second one squeezed in at No 18. It will be interesting to see how they fare in the longer term. His rankings of 2nd and 8th based on the 'rate of hits' shows how popular his work is.

My year end reviews often do well in the following year's table and it's a phenomenon I don't really understand. I usually give credit to the lead image rather than my own writing and the marvellous Priapus image I was able to use to headline the all time winners post for 2021 this particular post justifies it's position at No 7. Priapus has a similar 'mild' approach to fetish scenarios as that of Planet Gay but has been around for a lot longer. His work seems to have become more adventurous of late and indeed, more prolific, miraculously without losing any of the artistic skills that have propelled him to the top of my all-time rankings. 

Another of these reviews came in at 13 topped by a picture drawn by the ever-popular Cavelo which doesn't disprove my theory although I admit that I'd like to think I have some followers with similar geeky interests to myself! Both of these articles would have finished lower down if I had applied a correction for their favoured position of piking up hits from the very first days of the year, their positions in the Hit Rate Rankings (column 4) suggest a more modest position would better reflect their popularity.

Nestling just below the midway point of the table (at 12) is the solitary photograph-based post that managed to get into the top 20 for this year, but it's a good one - Dean Spencer's vintage bondage scene with Andrew Lennox in Can Am's 'Fetish Sex Fights 3'. Dean had a oddly alluring, 'pretty boy' sullenness that was great for bdsm bottoming and he had a notable career in the field. Dressing him in yellow rubber for this video was inspired and the uncluttered photography makes a good case for a fetish genre which is often submerged in over-elaborate overdressing. 

Royale Studio imagery topped last year's table but none of the 17 posts this year could repeat the trick. 'Airman's Gym Spanking' did best but it's score of 665 was well short of the top 20 cut. These posts made up 12% of the total articles published during the year and I am concerned that the Royale Project may be conflicting with the other aims of the blog. I will be making an announcement about this soon.

The rest of the table is made up of a varied selection of newcomers. One of them Arsch at 10 is a hangover from last year when he just missed the cut. It features a familiar milking scenario so I'm not surprised that it continued to score in 2022, if fact it's score in 2022 alone would have got into this years table, so I decided to let it in for this year. I have adjusted it's score to take account of last year. 

I did consider other contenders from 2021 (e.g. Ehrlich - Lab Rat and Roa Part 4) but considered those artists were already adequately represented and other names deserved a chance. 

Ehrlik, however, does figure in the final quarter of the 2022 table but with a different post "The Blacksmith of Zambe". This is the latest in a string of posts about his work, all of which have struck a chord with readers here even though they are mostly fem dom not gay. The 'little boy lost' angle seems to go down a treat.

Of the remainder, Penguin Frontier's 'Milking Outlet', was a simply conceived image with an arty finish and intriguing Sci-Fi back story. It made a spectacular debut, storming into the table with the top hit rate of the year. However, posted in late October, it's early days so I'm not predicting a new colossus has arrived  just yet!

The Spacron's renders and Damo's cartoonery are not ultra sophisticated but they are sexy and it's nice to see them representing different techniques in the table. Likewise St Jinx's more traditional draughtsmanship, his fantasy-based subject matter wouldn't normally be seen at mitchmen but his unusual crucifixion image which squeezed in at 20 is an elegant contribution to a niche genre that I suspect will be around in appreciative circles long after the artist's fairies have been forgotten.

This year's table features articles based on photographs, comics, cartoons, renders and traditional art, another cavalcade of gay, artistic talent which testifies to the wealth of sexy, expressive art available to us in the age of the internet. Long may it continue!

This playful image seems to recognise the special, inviolable status that a uniform has for it's wearer, but subverts it by showing him sweating with anxiety, or perhaps it's excitement, as the tailor's hands hover in the vicinity of his crotch. It's difficult to tell if the tailor's 'Asian-wink' is showing puzzlement, contempt at the absurdity of the soldier's sensitivity or is an aside to the viewer signalling his intention to embarrass the soldier even more with the classic, Inside Leg Measurement manoeuvre.

This image of course reworks a tailoring scenario made famous by Tom of Finland in the 60's


This image explores a similar embarrassment but this time it's the lustful stare of the chunky specimen at the adjacent urinal that is discomforting the military man (or is he a cop?). He's had to lower his trousers to get his dick out and it's exposed his white underwear and glimpses of butt cheek, a pose which makes his uniform seem less than intimidating.

This image has a striking resemblance to one of my recent illustrations for the 'Flat Cap Gang' story at the mitchmen Google Group (Chap 133) but I didn't intentionally copy it. I thought I had invented something new! A spooky and humbling demonstration of the secret power of the subliminal mind.



I'm a sucker (as it were) for men in snugly-fitting, white underwear.

This military man seems to be rueing giving in to his impulses, but although we see him lying on a bed bottom up, it's not clear how far he has actually gone, his natty underpants look pristine at this point. If he's been picked up by a hulk like the one in the picture above though, it's possible he's irreversibly committed anyway, I suppose. In which case it's another example of a brave serviceman showing fear in the face of an invader.

I have this titled as a Navy Military Policeman, you can see he has the traditional square back collar shape although it's not differentiated from the rest of his uniform.



Uniforms are an irresistible attraction to many of us but I hope we wouldn't all go to these lengths to demonstrate our interest. The object of desire here seems to be a paratrooper judging by his badge and they are usually credited with being exceptionally well trained to look after themselves behind enemy lines. This Bluto-like character may find he's bitten off more than he can chew.

Of course it's probably just a couple of playful chums.



This tells the other side of the story with the soldier living up to the promise offered by his uniform - demonstrating power, assertiveness and a handy weapon. The intimidating hulk proves to be more sensitive and complicated than he looks.

This picture is a further variation on the eroticism of violating the sanctity of uniforms 
but I certainly can't accuse this one of lacking courage.

Two cops amuse themselves by employing their batons for a ball-beating challenge instead of using them to direct traffic. It's one of a series, a later picture shows one of them reflecting on the mound it has produced in his trousers.

This picture with it's painful test of manhood and the artist's curious way of depicting eyes, plus the cropped hair in earlier pictures reminds me very much of the Art of Andy Warlord who I plan to feature here in the new year. 



Even service men are allowed to have their own secret desires. At first sight it appears this one has been overpowered and gagged by some predator but the artist reveals to us that he has a secret fetish. Hidden beneath his uniform is a set of leather fetish regalia. We might suppose from his gag that he likes to be dominated in the uniquely ritualistic way that is leather S&M.

This curious way of trying to show erotic things that are normally hidden is a phenomenon that seems to be a particular feature of Asian art. It's more commonly used add explicitness in showing sexual penetration but this is a more interesting application. In effect it's trying to show us what goes on inside this man's mind. A sort of ying and yang image, although you might argue that a man in uniform is the embodiment of submission to a master anyway. The leather thongs merely add an explicit erotic dimension.


This image carries the same message, but less subtly. Ordinarily daubings like this are applied by someone else as a demonstration of their power, so the undressing action here is an act of voluntary submission in response to that. 

A man in the act of undressing always makes an interesting picture and this one cleverly combines two examples of that particularly sexy moment when the fastenings are undone and begin  to reveal what is underneath. In this case it includes an intriguing jockstrap with a military green waistband and a blue pouch covered with patterns which are vaguely reminiscent of camouflage but strangely suggestive of contents that are extremely interesting and full. Notice how the lower edge of the waistband detours round the mound. Nice.


There's a powerful sense of submission here too. A salacious detail is obscured on the left, but for me the main interest lies in the soldier's arching torso, bursting out of his uniform in a vivid demonstration of the real human inside. The depiction of his groin area is beautifully detailed but commendably restrained.




This is a great beefcake picture that combines the power imagery of a uniform with the accentuated masculinity of highly developed muscles. However, this image also seems to show there's a rather different, youthful and somewhat innocent creature within. He has just knelt at the altar of another man, communed and been duly anointed. This is the embarrassing comic aftermath and you get the impression that it wasn't exactly what he was expecting. 

Life is full of unexpected lessons!


Navy whites seem to have gone out of fashion as homoerotic dress but I personally am as entranced by them as ever I was in my youth (as you might guess from my current Royale obsession). I'm glad to see that Team52Crazy is carrying on the tradition.

Like the preceding image, there's a sense of experimentation here, with shades of Oztangles in the cum-splattered mirror. Bathroom selfies crop up in this artist's work quite often which reflects the modern day proliferation of such images on the internet. There's something quite sexy in this form of narcissism with it's overtones of private moments, modest men revealing their secret vanity and - in shared bathrooms - the lurking possibility of a stranger bursting in at the wrong moment.

In this picture one wonders just who was responsible for decorating the mirror so impressively, was it the selfie-taker or someone else who has left his mark behind for an admirer just as this? 



I don't speak Thai but the phone message in  this cartoon appears to be pointing out the relative merits of consuming different lengths of bananas (or something). The puzzlement of the butch-looking recipient is sexy but I'm not sure I know why!

Most of the public art is censored or innocuous with a few exceptions but you get nice drawings of military men undressing or in suggestive situations. Kalabro - Milking Dave

 Above, a dramatic image by Kalabro taken from the original 'Milking Factory' article which was the most visited of all the posts at mitchmen in 2022. The 2009 mitchmen A-Z article on his early work also broke into the top 20 this year at No17 (below) and this artist also provided the second most popular new post of 2022.

 The table below lists the 20 most visited mitchmen posts during 2021.

This year the original Milking Factory post finally claimed the prize of being most visited during the year. It has been edging closer and closer to top spot ever since it first appeared in 2017 and in 2022 finally overtook the 'mitchmen review of IFNB' which has been it's principal rival in the last couple of years. However, the hit counts of both articles declined in a year in which visits to the blog generally were slightly down.

Milking Factory posts continued to feature further down the table at 11, 15 and 18 (albeit with reduced hits) and with three more bunched together just outside the top 20, the popular appeal of this series seems undimmed.

The same is true of the IFNB series which continued to score well despite being edged out of top position and the companion article 'IFNB Revisited' slightly improved it's position to No 19. The disappearance of this marvellous and very popular blog is a great loss, 
I must do a 3rd IFNB feature here soon!
 
N.B. The 'Etienne/Stephen article index (whose sudden popularity in 2021 surprised and bemused me) turned in another reasonable performance by normal standards this year, not quite enough to stay in the top 20, but it finished at 23.

There was quite a big gap down to the third placed article 'Amalaric - 1, A Slave to Passion' but that article did succeed in raising it's hit count during the year, considerably closing the gap on the leaders. No 3 in the series did the same trick, lifting it to 12th spot while Part 2 (Ancient History) just missed the cut at No 21. The institutional enslavement fantasies of these articles did much to set the tone of this blog in recent years and there's no sign that they are running out of steam yet. I didn't add to the series in 2022 but there is more material I would like to post, so watch this space.

Brosfate was a strong rival to Amalaric when they were first published but fell further behind in 2022. His more conventional bdsm scenarios still secured two places in the top 20 at No 10 and No 13.

2022 saw something of a return of the old days with a number of favourites from the mitchmen A-Z of Fetish Artists series unexpectedly entering the chart -  Brick (at No 4), Franco (6) and Kalabro (17). In the case of the last two it's been a gap of 4-5 years since we saw them in the top 20. 

The popularity of the Brick article was linked to the release of those tremendous new pictures from him at Metalbond , who helpfully guided his readers to read my 2008 article on his work.

The Kalabro article benefitted from the publication of his Slave Gang picture here at the start of the year and the 'Best of Kalabro' post I was prompted to write as a result. I admit that I shamelessly promote Kalabro's work here and greatly miss his contributions to our art.  
 ('Slave Gang' was one of two 2022 posts which would have squeaked into this table except that I have disallowed new posts this year, the other was a promotional post on Brick)

Franco is another great artist of long standing but his sudden return took me by surprise. His older works mentioned in my A-Z article can lay claim to being pioneers of the Mechanical Milking genre and he's achieved the remarkable feat in recent years of re-inventing himself in an entirely new style, producing more realistic variations of his old pieces that are supremely erotic. Like Brick, his hits mushroomed dramatically during the year but unlike Brick I don't know why. I guess someone has posted a link to my blog somewhere and wholeheartedly thank them!

These three re-joined the amazing Cavelo (7) and MCarcel (14) whose presence in this table seems permanent despite the articles being over 10 years old, their having ceased to publish new work and having no 'home' on the web (as far as I know, if you know better please tell me!). These are great artists but it's still an astonishing testament to their popularity. Priapus of Milet is a new boy by comparison but is shaping up the same way. His steady flow of super new art seems to assure him of continued popularity here. 

This phenomenon has meant that 8 different years are represented in this years table

Homoeros continued to maintain a presence in the table with the Gallery Guide (whose popularity seems bafflingly at variance with the rather dry content) in 5th place and 'Art of the Cross' reappearing at 20, possibly benefiting from the St Jinx picture I posted this year.

I was personally gratified to see that my Royale Studio Open Archive Post continued to attract hits this year at No 9. It's not really a measure of popularity because I regularly publish new versions linked to the Archive updates but I think the preservation of information on these pioneers of British fetish photography is highly important and the best way to achieve that in this day and age is copy it and copy it. My hope of consolidating as much as possible about Royale within the open archive is really just the first small step but I'm delighted that there are plenty of people out there who support it with their interest. 

This post and the two IFNB articles were the only photographic entries in the list

'Muscle' Matt continued to attract visits at No 16. I love his swaggering bodybuilders and am glad mitchmen blog has provided a rare platform for the retrospective appreciation of his stylish, amusing and very special sketches.

The most interesting post that didn't quite make it into the top 20 was The Art of Black Prof at No22, helped this year, I suppose, by my new post about his Tarzan storyette (which only just missed the cut for the top new post of 2022). His male bondage scenes are something of a side-line but I'm hoping that one day he will produce something for us that emulates the voluptuous glamour of his female captives.

The four posts displaced from last year's table are:

Roa and Control Room Violation were two of the outstanding new stars of last year of course and their fall vividly demonstrates the difficulty for new articles in keeping up with the scores of their first weeks following publication. It underlines the achievement of the 'old timers', that seem to have 'built-in majority' any politician would die for.

This year's chart favourites are the usual mix of old and new, with photography, cartoons, renders, photo-manips and traditional art representing an impressive, eclectic range of interests. 

As I reported in the last post, overall visits to the blog dropped a little this year (by 1%) after last year's amazing 20% rise. The winner's total here and the 'cut off' figure for entering the top 20 dropped by rather more, suggesting visitors are exploring a wider range of articles.

The mitchmen 'Index of Artists' feature recorded 12,497 hits in 2022, up a modest 2% on 2021 but still less than 2019's record 13,951. It was still visited often enough to have taken top place if I had included it in the top 20 table above. I'm glad visitors are still finding the index useful and hope it will lead many more newcomers to a fantastic heritage of gay art they didn't know about. 
 
 Next time I will reveal the most popular mitchmen post of all time, based on cumulative hits - did Priapus of Milet still manage to keep his top spot and hold off IFNB and Milking Factories?
